Presentation Title: What Are Smart (Enough) Systems And Why Do You Need Them?
Description: Most organizations struggle with information systems that are simply not smart
enough for today’s business climate. They are too dumb and too rigid. It’s not enough to implement process-oriented
software. Business processes have to be monitored, analyzed, automated, optimized and continuously improved.
Lots of approaches are being tried from Business Intelligence to Performance Management, from Service Oriented
Architecture to Business Process Management. But unless you take control of decisions, your systems will never be
smart enough. Neil and James introduce the idea of smart (enough) systems, show why they are needed and introduce
an approach that works.
About the Presenters: Neil and James are authors of the forthcoming book Smart (Enough) Systems
from Prentice Hall, and recognized industry experts on business rules, analytics and enterprise decision
management (EDM).
Q&A: A Q&A session will follow the talk. Neil and James will take your questions.
The Forum Connection: This year’s Rule Conferences will cover the rapidly growing footprint of
EDM, and how companies like yours are expanding its use within business and IT architectures. Neil and James will
be presenting there on “Business Rules, Decision Management and Smarter Systems”. Other sessions will cover a wide
range of topics on how EDM:
Brings agility to BPM
Delivers decision services within a SOA environment
Plays an important role in legacy migration/modernization
Helps achieve effective compliance at lower costs
Improves BI with closed-loop decisioning

“Automated decision systems are probably already being used in your industry, and they will undoubtedly grow in importance. If your business needs to make quick, accurate decisions on an industrialized scale, you need to read this book.”
- Thomas H. Davenport, Author of Competing on Analytics
“This book shows how to use proven technology to make business processes smarter. It clearly makes the case that organizations need to optimize their operational decisions. It is a must-have reference for process professionals throughout your organization.”
- Jim Sinur, Chief Strategy Officer, Global 360 (formerly of Gartner)
“A masterful presentation of an important new idea, Enterprise Decision Management (EDM). Like BPM, EDM is destined to provide a focal point where business minds and IT engineers can find common and very fertile ground to plan for success. There’s simply no alternative if you want your processes to be agile, adaptive and comprehensively compliant.”
