ABOUT THIS SESSION:
Neil Raden and James Taylor, co-chairs of the EDM summit and authors of “Smart (Enough) Systems” introduce a new competitive concept – Competing on Decisions. Thanks are due to Tom Davenport for raising the awareness of the need for analytics in his book, “Competing on Analytics.” Seeking out the increasingly small margins required by competitive business pressures has brought analytics into vogue, typically requiring vast amounts of digestible data .Getting their arms around this deluge of new and existing information, organizations realize that they can gain analytic insights customers, products, channels, partners and much more. But some companies are already finding that analytics is only a part of the process – the intelligent application of the findings of these new insights can only pay off if the decisions that are made are correct. By becoming decision-centric, by using business rules to control those decisions and by leveraging their data to make the best decisions companies are increasingly competing on decisions. What you will learn:
- What is a decision in a business context?
- Why decisions matter
- Why decisions are different
- How business rules control decisions
ABOUT THE SPEAKER(s):
Prior to co-founding Smart (enough) Systems, Neil Raden was the founder of Hired Brains, a research and advisory firm in Santa Barbara, CA, offering research and analysis services to technology providers as well as providing consulting and implementation services in Business Intelligence and Analytics to many of the Global 2000 companies. Mr. Raden began his career as a casualty actuary with AIG in New York before moving into software engineering, consulting and industry analysis, with experience in the application of analytics to business processes from fields as diverse as health care to nuclear waste management to cosmetics marketing and many others in between. He is a practicing consultant, industry analyst, speaker and author. His articles appear in industry magazines and he is the author of dozens of sponsored white papers for vendors and other organizations.

Widely credited with the invention of the term and the best known proponent of the approach, Mr Taylor helped create the emerging EDM market and is a passionate advocate of decision management. Mr. Taylor has 20 years experience in all aspects of the design, development, marketing and use of advanced technology including CASE tools, project planning and methodology tools as well as platform development in PeopleSoft’s R&D team and consulting with Ernst and Young. - How to develop an “analytic framework”
- How to “re-engineer” the analytic agenda to improve decision effectiveness and efficiency
- Lessons learned regarding the mapping enterprise architecture data to analytic tasks in the analytic agenda
- The EA Decision Services Methodology

Business Intelligence tools are more than just a reporting tool. In this presentation you will see how one company leveraged their BI tools as a key technology in a huge business process reengineering project. By treating BI as an abstract layer within their service oriented architecture (SOA), this company was able to change the way the business worked while leveraging their existing investments in BI tools. What you will learn:
- BI is more than an end user reporting tool
- BI tools can be used as your presentation layer
- BI can connect to your SOA via web services

ABOUT THIS SESSION:
Constraint Programming (CP) is a proven decision support technology for finding optimal solutions among multiple alternatives subject to different business constraints. CP is especially successful dealing with scheduling and resource allocation problems where a pure BR technology is not sufficient. Incorporating CP into rule-based systems provides more sophisticated decision-support capabilities. The presentation discusses real-world examples, describes different BR+CP integration scenarios, and demonstrates how different CP solvers could be incorporated into popular BR products. What you will learn:
- BR and CP integration techniques
- CP Solver as a BRMS component
- Online Decision Support with BR+CP
ABOUT THE SPEAKER(s):
Professor Freuder is the Director of the Cork Constraint Computation Centre at University College Cork. He has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, and the European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence, and is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy. In the Citeseer database of most cited authors in computer science Professor Freuder is ranked in the top one-tenth of one per cent. He has played a key role in obtaining over 40M euro in funding from government and industry to support scientific research.
Dr. Jacob Feldman is founder and CTO of OpenRules, Inc., an NJ corporation that created and maintains the popular open source business rules management system: “OpenRules”. He has extensive experience in development of decision support software using business rules and optimization technologies for real-world mission-critical applications. Dr. Feldman is also a Senior Researcher at the Cork Constraint Computation Centre.

ABOUT THIS SESSION:
Legislation, pension schemes, insurance policies are examples of texts that regulate our daily life.
Interpretation of the text is the first step. Next step is to decide how to use the interpretation in decisioning.
But texts are subject to change. Keeping track of text changes and their impact on the interpretation and decision services is crucial: this requires deep traceability as part of an analysis method. What you will learn:
- How texts can be analyzed and modeled
- How traceability can help you to cope with changing texts
- How the same text analysis leads to multiple decision services
ABOUT THE SPEAKER(s):
Since the start of his career in 2000 Stijn van Dooremalen has been involved in the interpretation, analysis and modeling of texts and the development of techniques and methodologies to support this. Stijn holds a university degree in Business Information Technology and wrote a final thesis on natural language processing experiences at the Dutch IRS. After graduation he started as a consultant for a specialized company that was involved in a large EU subsidy program called ePower where the cornerstones were laid for what was to become known as the RuleManagement Method. Stijn has been involved in large projects for government organizations and financials. His responsibilities mostly lie in the area of ?control? over complex legal texts and management of release and change of artifacts derived from these texts.
Bas Janssen has 20 years experience in management consultancy, knowledge technology and business rules. He started his career at Nolan, Norton & Co., a strategy consulting practice of KPMG. After 5 years Bas worked at Bolesian, the leading knowledge based systems company in the Netherlands, then, as sales consultant. Since 2001 he works within the domain of text analysis and modeling. In 2005 he co-founded RuleManagement Group (RMG). RMG has enhanced the text analysis method developed during a EU subsidy program called ePower, which it markets as the RuleManagement Method. To support this method RMG has developed its own toolset: the RM Suite.

ABOUT THIS SESSION:
The market is moving to an integrated approach for business logic, people are no longer happy to purchase separate systems with poor integration and lack of uniformity in use. In this presentation we discuss how a rule language can be extended to provide full support for CEP and how a rule engine and workflow engine can be tightly integrated for rich modeling.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER(s):
Mark Proctor received his B Eng in Engineer Science and Technology and then his M Sc in Business and Information Systems; both from Brunel University, West London. His M Sc thesis was in the field of Genetic Algorithms; which is where he first got his interest for anything AI related. Mark became involved in the Drools expert system project at an early stage and soon became its project lead. Mark then joined JBoss (later acquired by RedHat) as an employee when the Drools project was federated into the JBoss JEMS stack. Having developed a powerful expert system, Mark is now turning his attention to other declarative paradigms in an effort to unify them to allow for richer domain modeling environments.
